Introduction to Lapbooking through Animals

Today I am excited to share with you a wonderful new homeschool science curriculum from Elemental Science: Lapbooking through Animals. Science has become a favorite subject within our homeschool. We tend to do a lot of science beginning at the preschool level, and are always looking for something fresh and new that will captivate our three eager learners. Lapbooking through Animals met our criteria for an informative, fun, and engaging science curriculum suitable for learners of varying ages.

My curriculum review is based upon the experience of our 5-year-old son who is currently finishing up Kindergarten. Although our 5-year-old is the primary child doing the lapbook, our other two children (3-year-old preschooler and 11-year-old 6th grader) join along with him nearly every time we begin to do this science curriculum and enjoy every minute of it! At the end of the review you will have a chance to win your own copy of this phenomenal curriculum!

What We Enjoy Most About Lapbooking through Animals

          • The content is very thorough yet not overwhelming for our son. This lapbook surveys 44 different animals over an 18-week period, using a combination of readings, coloring, creating mini-books, comprehension activities, You Tube videos, and hands on projects. The time frame the publisher gives to study the animals was very well thought out and gives the learner enough time to process the information and delve further if they desire. Also, the multi-sensory approach is a great fit for our 5-year-old son.

          • Our son loves the fact that he is able to do so many “hands on” projects. Although our son is excited to learn so many new things about different animals, his favorite part is completing different projects to go along with what he is learning. He is a very hands on {kinesthetic} learner so naturally he leans towards this type of application. However, because the readings are divided up according to age (K-2nd and 3rd-5th) I think this achieves a perfect balance of reading and projects for his age and learning style, which isn’t always easy to find.

          • The flexibility to add or take away content depending on your needs. This works perfectly for our relaxed eclectic approach to homeschooling. For instance, some days we will read a lot more than the assigned readings and other dayss we might watch some videos on You Tube that correspond with the animal we are studying while scaling back on the readings. There is total freedom in what information you will explore but no shortage of recommended resources for a superb and well rounded education of the material being studied. Again, this goes hand in hand with our relaxed approach to homeschooling and it proves to be delightful to our son to have the freedom to explore according to his particular interest in the animal we’re learning.

          • This lapbook has prompted my son to study animals in a very in depth way. I honestly would not have known how much my son loves animals if we had not agreed to do this lapbook. As a homeschooling mother we know that anything our children study that prompts further study is a fabulous thing! In addition, this lapbook is very informative and has taught me many things I did not know. This is one of my favorite things about homeschooling our children – learning along side them.

          • I also really appreciate the fact that the only supplies you’ll to complete the lapbook portion are: 2 file folders or 4 sheets of 8.5″ x 11″ cardstock, colored pencils or crayons, markers, glue stick, scissors, and stapler. For the readings we used our library card to get the main two texts and also used lots of books we already own in conjunction with the internet. These are items that we always have on hand making it a very stress-free curriculum off the get go.

Our Favorite Project So Far

              • There are so many wonderful projects to choose from throughout the lessons, but when asked, my son undoubtedly said, “Making my clothespin giraffe!”
              • This project was loved by all three of our children and was completed while making the animal mini-book #2.

We Are Looking Forward To

          • Studying invertebrates and making a habitat for all of the beautiful German snails in our back yard!
          • And of course moving on to another Elemental Science Lapbook!

I Would Recommend This Curriculum For

              • A full on {18 week} science course for your children in K-5th.
              • Families with multiple age learners as it allows an opportunity to study the same subject at different levels.
              • Any homeschool family with children interested in animals.

I am not sure if the grade level is super strict, as I have learned this year that I cannot place actual grade levels for my kids. As in some subjects they are either a grade behind their actual grade or a grade ahead. However they both LOVE animals and I just know they would both love this.

  35. Looks like a great giveaway, thanks. My 7 year old is really excited as science is her absolute fav!!!

  36. This looks great. My children love animals! :-)

    Love your reviews.

  38. This looks great! We’ll be starting out first year homeschooling this fall with my 6 year old son. He loves science, so we’ll be encouraging it as much as possible. :)
