The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. John 10:10 NKJV It was a last-minute decision to try filling a few hours of one of the weekends that my boys spend with their dad. I had always wanted to try one of those painting classes, and so I found a local studio that offers them and signed up on-line for a Saturday night session. Alone, I walked up to the second-story studio in an historic downtown building. After giving the hostess my name, she marked me off the list and reached down Continue Reading...This post may contain affiliate links. See my full disclosure policy.
Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NKJV) It doesn’t make sense. I hardly ever eat. And yet, I’m gaining weight. Granted, when I do eat, it’s not always healthy food that I’m sticking in my face. But calories are calories, right? It would make sense to me that if I’m not eating a lot of food, I shouldn’t be gaining weight. So why isn’t it working that way? I attended a Continue Reading...This post may contain affiliate links. The word "diet" has become synonymous with torture. Deprivation. Punishment. We go on a diet, try fad diets, and ultimately blow our diets. It doesn't have to be this way. On a rudimentary level, our diet is simply what we eat. Whatever you eat on any random day of the week is your diet. Your diet may be sort of healthy, or nothing that could remotely pass for healthy. Regardless, if you consume food (and I would imagine that you do) you are "on a diet". Nutrition is about 50% of the healthy-diet-and-exercise touted as being necessary for achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. (That's Continue Reading...This post may contain affiliate links. It's creeping up on us again, isn't it? There are just a few little squares left on the calendar, counting down to that morning when we toss out that calendar marked with the birthdays, doctor's appointments, dance recitals, and baseball games from the past twelve months, and move on to one containing fresh, blank pages. Unadulterated squares, holding the promise of busy and overwhelming, memory-making days to come. This is generally the time when we look over those calendar pages and figure out when we're going to fit in those things that are important to us. Will we travel to visit family Continue Reading...This post may contain affiliate links. See my full disclosure policy.
This morning was my long run. I say that as if I always go on a long run on Saturday mornings, which is entirely not true. The plan had been to meet some girlfriends for a run downtown. See, we're running in a relay together in a few weeks, and we were going to run the course together. But when I turned on my alarm for 0500, I neglect to remember that the 0500 setting is for Monday through Friday only (iPhone problems), and I didn't wake up until minutes before I was supposed to meet the girls. Still, I managed a long run. Okay, for me, 4.5 miles is a long run. The route I take is a very Continue Reading...This post may contain affiliate links. See my full disclosure policy.
All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me,but not all things edify. Let no one seek his own, but each one the other’s well-being. 1 Corinthians 10:32 (NKJV) It was our first science fair project. My 5th grader, being definitely my child, decided to do his science project on ice cream. We tested four different brands of ice cream to determine which would melt the quickest at room temperature. Once we figured out which brand melted the quickest, we started looking at the ingredients of each. Most of the ingredients were pretty basic: milk, Continue Reading...This post may contain affiliate links. See my full disclosure policy.
You know you’re getting old when you start complaining about your aching back. It was last summer when it hit me—my back wasn’t hurting any more. I have had mid and lower back pain forever. I was constantly twisting around, trying to pop my back, hoping that one of the little cracking noises would offer more than a moment of relief. It was easy to blame my back pain on my sorry little temporary twin mattress. But despite no changes to my mattress, my back felt great! For me, I typically get lower, lower back pain just before my period. It’s about the only PMS symptom I’ve consistently had. Continue Reading...This post may contain affiliate links. Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it. 1 Corinthians 9:24 (NKJV) We've all heard about good intentions, and people often talk about living intentionally. What does that mean, exactly? I fully intended to eat healthy today. With a crazy work schedule, I know that I also function better when I eat healthy food, and I crash and burn when I succumb to the ease of the drive-thru diet. However, I did not back up my intentions with actions that would help me to achieve my desired end-state. I shopped for healthy Continue Reading...This post may contain affiliate links. "My soul, wait silently for God alone, for my expectation is from Him." Psalm 62:5 There are major physiological obstacles to weight loss that no one ever wants to talk about. Why? Because it's uncomfortable. Ladies, can we get real about our bodies for a moment? I love watching The Biggest Loser. It's extreme weight loss, to be sure. But it underscores the principal that diet, exercise, and concerted effort are all you need to lose weight. The show features both men and women, and without fail, the men always lose more weight more quickly than do the women. No biggie. Men's bodies are just Continue Reading...This post may contain affiliate links. See my full disclosure policy.
"Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in good health, just as your soul prospers." 3 John 1:2 (NKJV) Wouldn't it be great if the Lord could forgive us our calories as easily as He forgives us of our sins? Oh, if I only had a magic wand and could wake up tomorrow with no cellulite on my thighs, no stretch marks on my belly, and arms that don't double as a back-up mainsail. But there is no magic wand. There isn't even a magic pill, shake, powder, bar, or beverage that will effortlessly convert you into a fit person overnight. My dad has always pointed out that all those Continue Reading...This post may contain affiliate links. See my full disclosure policy.
